Why is Oktoberfest celebrated in September?

August 14, 2023 by s.smith

Get ready to don your lederhosen or dirndl and raise your beer steins, because it’s time to celebrate Oktoberfest. Despite the name, the party kicks off in September! If you’re wondering why, let’s dive into the culture and fun that makes Oktoberfest a global sensation.

Originating from a royal love story, Oktoberfest traces its roots back to the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in 1810. The festivities began in late September and flowed into early October, and that tradition continues today.

So, why September, you ask? Tradition! Well, that’s definitely part of it, but let’s be honest – who wants to wait for October to have a blast? The mid-September start ensures we make the most of the pleasant weather, setting the stage for an unforgettable celebration that kicks off the autumn season with a bang. The festival was also held at a time when the harvest was complete, giving farmers and rural communities an opportunity to come together and celebrate the end of the growing season.

Over time, the festival evolved to include beer tents, food stalls, and carnival rides. Today, Oktoberfest is one of the largest and most well-known festivals in the world, attracting millions of visitors each year. While the festival continues to celebrate the customs and traditions of Germany, it has also become a symbol of unity and celebration for people from all over the world.

Now, let’s talk about the irresistible charm of Oktoberfest. The heartwarming sight of traditional Bavarian outfits, the oom-pah of lively music, and the aroma of sizzling bratwurst and soft pretzels fill the air with an electric excitement. At Loveland Oktoberfest, we’re bringing this lively Bavarian spirit right to your doorstep. But hold onto your pretzels, because here’s the twist: Loveland Oktoberfest takes a leaf out of Munich’s book, commencing in the second week of September to coincide with the grand celebration across the Atlantic. The kickoff to the 2023 Loveland Oktoberfest celebration will be September 15th at 4pm with the Mayor of Loveland Oktoberfest, Cindy Makin, performing the traditional first tapping.

In a nutshell, Loveland Oktoberfest embodies the lively Oktoberfest spirit by embracing its Bavarian origins while adding our own unique twist. So, when you see the calendar flip to September, rest assured that the fun is just around the corner. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, a foodie, or simply looking for a good time, Loveland Oktoberfest promises to be a festive extravaganza that’s sure to leave you with a heart full of cheer and a stein raised high in jubilation. Prost to good times, great company, and a September to remember!
